Thanks to everyone for their very kind words about Bender the chameleon - you have no idea how much I appreciate it.

The flooding locally continues apace - Oxford residents evacuatedas flood waters rise - hard to believe that this is happening less than twenty miles away. We're untouched by it here, thankfully.

The RAF have even been sending the Sea Kings of 22 and 202 squadrons inland - whenever I catch a glimpse of a big yellow helicopter on the TV, it makes me smile - because my dad was stationed with both squadrons, 202 the longest, when he was in the air force. Some of the happiest memories of my childhood are tied up with big yellow helicopters - our school was under one of the flight paths they used to get to the Humber estuary, and if we were out at playtime they'd swing low enough for the winchman to wave out the door at us. Plus every year at the Sergeants mess kids christmas parties, Santa used to turn up in a big yellow helicopter, and I believe I've told this tale before!

Anyway:

That one's from 202 squadron - you can tell by the duck on the side. The squadron emblem is a mallard; there was a pond outside the mess at Finningley which had several pairs resident, and they used to bring them indoors when the pond froze in the winter and the foxes tried to cross to the roosting island. And believe me, 'mess' is the right word for indoor ducks...

A bit about 202 squadron.

That's a Mk3 Sea King, an older version - I think my dad worked on Mk1 and Mk2s, but I'd need to check with him.

That one's from 22 squadron - again, I can tell by the emblem on the side. Never could work out what it was, exactly, but I recognise it. That one's a Mk5, presumably one of the most recent!

A little bit about 22 squadron, including what the damn emblem is!

Ah, happy memories.

Although when I was checking out the flood story, this other one caught my eye:

Lovemaking hedgehogs disturb the peace!

Having had pairs of hedgehogs bonking in my garden, I can attest to the alarmingly loud noises they make!

And so thus I head off to Abingdon, to see if the shop has floated away and play with my beloved reptiles... before coming home to bed!

Have a nice day, chaps. ;)

LOL. That's weird. I used to live in Abingdon, although most of my time in that area was spent in picturesque Didcot. Those banks are always flooding, if i remember... Wallingford is always worse tho.

I don't know if you read Terry Pratchett, but "lovemaking hedgehogs" sounds like the makings for one of his lewd drinking songs!

The hedgehog can never be buggered at all... yers. although why anyone would want to get that close to one of the rancid, stinking things is entirely beyond me!

(God they're vile.)

Is it bad of me that the story of hedgehog sex cracked my shit up? No? Good.

Hee hee, I love my dirty mind ;)

No, honestly, no dirty mind needed. They screech and snort and huff and make a hell of a racket when they're having sex. Honestly, hedgehogs are really horrid - and the males have enormously large penises, for the size of animal. Strange but true.

I know - aren't they lovely? I get all misty eyed when I see one in yellow. (But only that type. Although Wessex and Whirlwind also in yellow? Instant teary-eyed reminiscence...)

(The Wessex and Whirlwind were the two types of previous helicopter used by 202 and 22 squadrons. In case you're wondering what the hell I'm on about. We once saw a Whirlwind - in yellow, from 202 sqn - hanging from the roof of a hangar at an air museaum as a static display. My dad, in a voice that rang to the rafters, proudly announced to the world 'THAT'S ONE OF MINE!'

Yeah, he's pretty proud of 'em too.)
