Overall Impression:
Gosh. 36 one shots and two (incomplete) epics - that's pretty good going, considering that my writing suffered badly from going back to working nights. It's interesting to see the output - and it's been a hell of a lot less heartbreaking churning out the single chapter pieces. There simply isn't the same level of emotional attachment to them.
So, yeah. Been a pretty good writing year, overall. Nice spread of bands, too.
My favorite story this year:
Um. Difficult. On sheer writing quality, I would say Rebirth. Other than that - well, like I say, you just don't get the same attachment to the one shots!
My best story this year:
Gah. Hard question. For overall writing quality, plot and all that, then I think Rebirth. For emotional kick, No Hoper Boy.
And of course, A Matter Of Life And Death is quite a spiffing read too.
Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Rebirth.
Most beloved by readers:
A Matter Of Life And Death. Or anything short.
Most fun story:
Strip!. IMO, anyway. I was mildly aggravated by all the people who said "well it shouldn't take that long..."
FFS people, get a grip. It takes longer when you're wrestling for control and giggling and - *sigh* Never mind. I thought it was fun, anyway.
Most sexy story:
Long. Something about pretty boys kissing in the dark, yes?
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Oo-er. Hard to pinpoint, that. I suspect that it would be the same one that I named in the previous question....
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Ha! Nothing beats the goat sex... although there have been rather a lot of rape fics this year. I suppose that's pretty wrong. And there was the hairbrush handle in Trichomania.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
None of my own, really! Oh, wait - Josh Homme is more fun to write than I'd imagined, because he's a big crazy bastard. So that would be No Hoper Boy.
Hardest story to write:
A Matter Of Life And Death. Fucking thing. Along with Beneath These Waves - I'm so pleased with what I have so far on that one (don't go looking for it on RF, cos it's hidden) that it's making it extremely hard to carry on with. Sort of like 'how the hell can I follow that?!'
I'll think of something.
Easiest story to write:
Honestly, I don't know. Most of the one shots came pretty easily; I would get an idea, write it, post it. End - if you'll pardon the pun - of story.
Biggest Disappointment:
Rebirth. Considering how much people have enjoyed my AU stuff before, that this one pretty much sank without trace did come as a surprise. But then, there has been a distinct dearth of anyone appreciating anything over at RF this year, so it's not the only one that fell through the cracks.
Biggest surprise:
How many bands I've written this year! Also, that I seem to have finally cracked the drabble thing. They're a lot of fun once you've got the hang of them.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
No one story in particular, I don't think. Unless you count the fact that I'm writing a lot of Zico as an indicator of how fond of the lads I am! Seriously though, a lot of the fics this year have had a theme of being pushed too far, and the consequences - I suspect that may be rather telling.
Final thoughts:
Hmm. I pretty much stuck to my mantra of 'no more epics', and although it meant I got a lot more writing done it does mean you miss out on the much larger satisfaction of actually finishing one. Overall, a productive year, I think!
But what do the readers think? After all, a writer with no readers is merely masturbating in the dark, right?
